100% Grass-fed, Free Range Beef, and Pasture-raised Pork

We strive to raise our animals in harmony with nature. We believe nature did not intend for ruminant animals such as cows, goats, and sheep to eat grain. Ruminant livestock have difficulty digesting grain and frequently develop health disorders as a result of grain feeding. Additionally, grass-fed products are less likely to be contaminated with acid-resistant forms of E. coli bacteria. Therefore, ruminant animals should be raised outside on lush pasture and have access to plenty of hay in the winter. For the healthiest and best tasting beef, insist on 100% grass-fed.

We also raise our pork on pasture where they can feed on grass, and get exposure to sunlight and fresh air. Since pigs are not ruminant animals they are also fed grains soaked in milk which also promotes health in pigs. And although there are many factors that can influence the flavor and tenderness of meat, marbling (or fat content) is the best indicator of flavorful, juicy meat.

Organic, Free Range Poultry

Chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese are more grass-friendly poultry species. They can obtain the majority of their daily feed from pasture and this will be reflected in a significant increase in the healthy aspects of their eggs and meat.

Many poultry products that are sold as “free-range” do not allow the poultry daily access to green, living pasture and only have access to dirt pens. For healthier poultry, they must have access to short fresh green growing grass. Frequent moves for daily access to fresh pasture and insects are best. Laying hens, ducks, turkeys, and geese should be allowed enough space so that self-caught insects can be a significant part of their diet.

Chickens should be raised in small moveable production units on pasture rather than large, fixed, commercial poultry houses. In industrial confinement systems, chickens are de-beaked to prevent them from fighting. However, de-beaked chickens can’t naturally grasp and pull on forage preventing them from clamping down on grass, and pasture insects which creates tastier meat and rich orange-yolk eggs.

Where does our beef come from?

The beef you’ll find at our Broad Street Market farm stand comes from Thistle Creek Farms located in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Thistle Creek Farms has been producing high quality grass fed beef for more than a quarter century. Their main goal is to raise grass-fed beef on the best grasses from around the world. Their grasses come from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Romania. They provide a great tasting product as well as the health benefits of beef raised on grass. The cattle are raised outside all year. They are moved to new grass a minimum of once a day but usually twice. They spend their lives grazing big areas just as they were created to do.
